Outdoor Lighting FAQs — Christmas, Permanent, Landscape & Event Lighting | E.L.F. Designs

Question 1

Are your technicians certified and insured, and do you use commercial-grade, weather-resistant LED lights?

Accepted Answer

All technicians are certified and fully insured for your safety. The lights installed are commercial-grade, weather-resistant LEDs made to handle Maryland's winter weather and last all season. This means the setup is reliable, energy-efficient, and secure for your home or business.

Question 2

Do you offer free estimates for homes and businesses?

Accepted Answer

Free estimates are always available for both home and business lighting projects. There's no cost to set up a design consultation or to get a custom quote for your property. You can request your free estimate online, by calling, or even through social media. This way, you'll know your options and pricing upfront, with no pressure or hidden fees.

Question 3

What should I do to prepare my property before you come out to install exterior lights?

Accepted Answer

To get your property ready for an exterior light installation, just make sure the areas you want lit are clear of obstacles — move vehicles, decorations, or outdoor furniture out of the way so crews have easy access. Trim any overgrown bushes or trees if they could block the lights or make it tough to install them. If you have pets, keep them indoors or somewhere safe while work is happening. If electrical outlets or access panels are locked or inside, make sure someone's around to unlock them or give access. There's no need to buy any equipment or supplies — everything else is handled by the crew from start to finish.

Question 4

Do you offer emergency repair service if a section of my display stops working after installation?

Accepted Answer

Emergency repair service is available for existing customers if part of your display stops working after installation. Just call the support line, and a technician can come out to troubleshoot and fix the issue. Most repairs are handled quickly to make sure your lights keep looking great all season.

Question 5

What areas do you serve for exterior lights installations for homes and businesses?

Accepted Answer

Service covers much of north-central Maryland, including Harford County, Baltimore County, and Cecil County. Popular towns within the service area are Bel Air, Fallston, Forest Hill, Jarrettsville, Monkton, Towson, Catonsville, Dundalk, and surrounding communities. Both residential and commercial outdoor light installations are available across these regions. If you're outside these areas but nearby, just ask — there's often flexibility depending on the project.

Question 9

How far in advance should I book for the holiday season?

Accepted Answer

E.L.F. Designs is now booking 2026 Christmas and holiday lighting installations. Holiday schedules fill fast — especially for the most popular dates before Thanksgiving — so we recommend reaching out early. Getting on the schedule early also gives us time to plan a custom design tailored to your property.

Question 10

Do you lease the lights, or do I need to buy my own decorations?

Accepted Answer

All lights and decorations for Christmas light installations are leased as part of the service, so you don't need to buy your own. Everything — from design to installation, maintenance, takedown, and storage — is included. This means you get fresh, high-quality displays each season without having to purchase or store any equipment yourself.

Question 11

If you lease the outdoor lights, do you take care of maintenance and any replacements during the season if bulbs or sections go out?

Accepted Answer

All maintenance and replacements are included when you lease outdoor lights. If a bulb or section goes out during the season, just reach out and a technician will come by to fix or replace it — no extra charges within 28 hours. Everything from initial install to repairs and end-of-season takedown is covered, so you don't need to worry about upkeep or surprises.

Question 12

Do you handle the full process including design, installation, maintenance, removal, and off-season storage?

Accepted Answer

Everything gets handled from start to finish, so you don't have to worry about a thing. That includes designing a unique display for your home or business, putting up the lights and decorations, maintaining them if anything needs fixing during the season, taking everything down after the holidays, and storing all the lights in a secure, climate-controlled facility until the next year. You get a hassle-free experience, and there's no need to buy, store, or repair the equipment yourself.

Question 13

Can you create a custom display for my roofline and walkway, and can I request specific colors or themed designs?

Accepted Answer

Custom displays for rooflines and walkways are available, and you can definitely request specific colors or themed designs. Each setup is made to fit the style of your home and your preferences — whether you want traditional white lights, bold colors, or a fun theme for a holiday or event. Weatherproof LED options let you choose color patterns that stand out. Just share your ideas during your free consultation, and a design will be put together to match exactly what you're looking for.

Question 14

How much does professional Christmas light installation cost in Maryland?

Accepted Answer

Christmas light installation pricing in Maryland varies based on the size of your home, the complexity of the design, and the areas you want lit — roofline, walkways, trees, and more. Most residential installations range from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars for the season, which includes design, installation, maintenance, takedown, and storage. E.L.F. Designs offers free, no-obligation estimates so you get an exact price for your property with no surprises. Early-season bookings (before mid-October) also qualify for a $100 discount for new customers. Call 443-619-9049 or request your free estimate online.

Question 15

Do you install Christmas lights for commercial properties like storefronts, restaurants, and office buildings?

Accepted Answer

Yes — E.L.F. Designs installs holiday lighting for commercial properties throughout Harford County, Baltimore County, and Cecil County. Storefronts, restaurants, office buildings, HOA common areas, and other commercial properties all benefit from a professionally designed holiday display. Commercial installations are quoted individually and include the same full-service experience as residential: design, installation, maintenance, takedown, and storage. Contact us for a free commercial estimate.

Question 16

What types of holiday lighting styles do you offer?

Accepted Answer

E.L.F. Designs offers classic white roofline lighting, colorful holiday displays, tree wrapping, wreath lighting, garland lighting, pathway lighting, and fully customized designs for residential and commercial properties across Harford County, MD.

Question 17

How long does a Christmas light installation usually take?

Accepted Answer

The timeline depends on the size of your property and the complexity of the lighting design. Many residential installations are completed in a single visit, while larger homes and commercial projects may take additional time to ensure every section is installed properly and looks its best.

Question 18

Can you install holiday lighting around trees, shrubs, and landscaping?

Accepted Answer

Yes. We install custom lighting on trees, shrubs, columns, pathways, and other landscape features to create a balanced display that enhances the entire property. Every installation is designed to complement your home's exterior and highlight its unique features.

Question 19

How much does permanent lighting cost?

Accepted Answer

Permanent lighting cost depends on the size of your home or building, the number of linear feet being covered, and the complexity of the installation. Most residential projects in Maryland fall somewhere between a few thousand dollars and several thousand dollars for a full roofline installation. Commercial properties vary more widely based on scale. Because every property is different, the best way to get an accurate number is to request a free estimate — E.L.F. Designs will measure your property and provide a detailed quote with no obligation. You can also visit our permanent lighting cost page for a more detailed breakdown of what affects pricing.

Question 20

Can permanent lights be used for Christmas?

Accepted Answer

Absolutely — Christmas is one of the most popular uses for permanent lighting. Because the fixtures stay in place year-round, you can program a full holiday display every December without any installation or takedown. Red and green, warm white, multicolor — whatever look you want for the season is just a few taps away in the app. Many homeowners find that permanent lighting pays for itself over time compared to leasing seasonal lights every year, especially when you factor in the convenience of never having to schedule an install.

Question 21

Can I change the colors from my phone?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The permanent LED systems installed by E.L.F. Designs are fully app-controlled, so you can change colors, patterns, brightness, and schedules directly from your smartphone or tablet. Want warm white for everyday curb appeal, orange and purple for Halloween, red and green for Christmas, or your team's colors on game day? It's all a few taps away. The app works over your home's Wi-Fi, and most color and pattern changes take effect instantly.

Question 22

Are the lights visible during the daytime?

Accepted Answer

The LED fixtures are low-profile and designed to sit flush along your roofline or architectural features, so they blend in cleanly during the day. Most people find they're barely noticeable when the lights are off — they don't stick out the way traditional holiday clips or bulky fixtures do. When the lights are on at night, the effect is dramatic and clean. The goal is a system that looks intentional and architectural, not like holiday decorations left up year-round.

Question 23

How long does installation take?

Accepted Answer

Most residential permanent lighting installations are completed in a single day. The exact time depends on the size of your home, the number of linear feet being covered, and any complexity in the roofline or architectural details. Commercial installations may take longer depending on the scale of the project. E.L.F. Designs will give you a realistic time estimate during your free consultation so you can plan accordingly. Once the system is in, there's nothing else to do — no annual setup, no takedown, no storage.

Question 24

Can permanent lights be installed on commercial buildings?

Accepted Answer

Yes — E.L.F. Designs installs permanent lighting on commercial properties throughout Harford County, Baltimore County, and Cecil County. Restaurants, retail storefronts, office buildings, and other commercial properties are all great candidates for permanent architectural lighting. It's a powerful way to increase visibility, improve curb appeal after dark, and create a distinctive look that sets your business apart. Commercial installations are quoted individually based on the building's size and design. Contact us for a free commercial estimate.

Question 25

What happens if a fixture stops working or gets damaged?

Accepted Answer

E.L.F. Designs stands behind every permanent lighting installation. If a fixture stops working or is damaged, reach out and a technician will come out to assess and repair it. The commercial-grade fixtures used are built to handle Maryland's weather year-round, but if something does go wrong, you're not on your own. Contact us directly for service and repair support.

Question 26

Do you offer permanent lighting in Harford County, MD?

Accepted Answer

Question 27

Can permanent lighting be used throughout the year?

Accepted Answer

Question 28

Do you install lighting for patios, decks, and outdoor living spaces?

Accepted Answer

Yes. E.L.F. Designs installs permanent lighting for patios, decks, pergolas, covered porches, outdoor kitchens, walkways, and other outdoor living areas. Well-placed lighting helps create a warm, inviting atmosphere for relaxing evenings, entertaining guests, and enjoying your outdoor spaces.

Question 29

Is permanent lighting a good option for businesses in Harford County, MD?

Accepted Answer

It is. Permanent lighting gives businesses a flexible way to enhance storefronts, office buildings, restaurants, event venues, and community spaces. It also makes it easy to celebrate holidays, seasonal promotions, or special events without reinstalling temporary lights each time.

Question 30

Will permanent lighting improve my property's curb appeal?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Professionally installed permanent lighting highlights architectural details, entryways, landscaping, and outdoor gathering spaces while creating a polished appearance after sunset. It provides attractive exterior lighting every season without the need for temporary decorations.

Question 31

Can you install landscape lighting for patios and walkways, and do you offer design help to make it look cohesive?

Accepted Answer

Landscape lighting for patios, walkways, and yards is available, and design help is part of the process. Everything starts with a free consultation where technicians look at your property and figure out what kind of lighting makes the space feel connected and balanced. Options include path lights, accent lighting, and bistro-style fixtures. You'll get design recommendations tailored to your property's style, so the lighting fits in with your existing features and landscaping. Custom solutions focus on safety, appearance, and energy efficiency. Installation, maintenance, and removal are handled from start to finish.

Question 32

What is the difference between landscape lighting and bistro string lights?

Accepted Answer

Landscape lighting typically refers to fixtures installed at ground level or low on structures — path lights, uplights on trees or shrubs, and accent lights that highlight architectural features or garden beds. Bistro string lights (also called café lights or Edison lights) are strung overhead between posts, pergolas, or structures to create a warm, ambient glow over a patio or outdoor seating area. Many properties benefit from both: landscape lighting for safety and drama at ground level, and bistro lights overhead for atmosphere and ambiance. E.L.F. Designs can design and install either or both as part of a cohesive outdoor lighting plan.

Question 33

Is landscape and bistro lighting available for commercial properties like restaurants and event venues?

Accepted Answer

Yes — landscape and bistro lighting is a popular upgrade for restaurants, breweries, wineries, event venues, and other commercial properties throughout Harford County, Baltimore County, and Cecil County. Outdoor bistro lighting creates an inviting atmosphere that draws customers in and encourages them to stay longer. E.L.F. Designs handles design, installation, and ongoing maintenance so your outdoor space always looks its best.

Question 34

Is landscape and bistro lighting a permanent installation, or can it be removed?

Accepted Answer

Both options are available depending on your needs. Landscape and bistro lighting can be installed as a permanent fixture that stays in place year-round, or it can be set up for a specific event or season and removed afterward. For permanent installations, the fixtures are designed to be weather-resistant and low-maintenance. For event-based setups — like a wedding, graduation party, or seasonal patio display — E.L.F. Designs handles installation and takedown so you don't have to. Just let us know your goals during your free consultation and we'll recommend the right approach.

Question 35

Do you install landscape lighting for new construction or only existing properties?

Accepted Answer

E.L.F. Designs works with both new construction and existing properties. If you're building a new home or commercial space and want landscape lighting designed into the project from the start, that's a great time to plan it — it's often easier to route wiring and position fixtures before landscaping is fully established. For existing properties, the team works around your current landscaping and hardscaping to create a clean, professional installation with minimal disruption.

Question 36

Do you provide a design consultation for exterior lights that helps me choose the right brightness, placement, and overall look for my home or business?

Accepted Answer

A free design consultation is included with all lighting projects. During this process, a technician visits your property to talk through your goals, answer questions, and suggest ideas tailored to your space — whether it's a home or commercial building. The consultation covers things like choosing the right brightness level, picking the best light placement, and designing an overall look that fits your style and the property's features. You'll also get recommendations for specific lighting types and energy-efficient options, plus a clear estimate before any work starts. The goal is to make sure everything not only looks great, but also fits your needs, stays safe, and works with your budget.

Question 37

Can you install wedding and event lighting in addition to your Christmas lighting services?

Accepted Answer

Yes, wedding and event lighting is available in addition to Christmas lighting services. Custom lighting setups are offered for weddings, graduations, sweet 16 parties, and other special events. The team handles everything, from design and rental to installation and takedown, making it easy to create the right atmosphere without the hassle. Both indoor and outdoor lighting options are available, using commercial-grade, weather-resistant LED lights to match your event's style. The lights are leased for your event, so there's no need to worry about buying or storing anything afterward.

Question 38

Can you provide wedding lights with setup and takedown for an outdoor ceremony and reception?

Accepted Answer

Wedding lighting packages include setup and takedown for both outdoor ceremonies and receptions. The team handles everything from the initial design consultation to installation, making sure your venue looks just the way you want it for your big day. After the event is over, all lighting and decorations are professionally removed so you don't have to worry about cleanup. Everything is rented, which simplifies the process — no need to buy or store anything yourself. This service covers a variety of styles, including bistro lights, landscape accents, tree wraps, and more, to help create the perfect atmosphere.

Question 39

How far in advance should I book event lighting for a wedding or outdoor celebration?

Accepted Answer

For weddings and larger events, booking at least 3 to 6 months in advance is strongly recommended — especially for peak seasons like spring and fall when outdoor events are most popular in Maryland. This gives the team enough time to visit your venue, design a custom lighting plan, and coordinate installation around your event timeline. For smaller gatherings or events with more flexibility, shorter lead times may be possible. Reach out as early as you can to check availability.

Question 40

What types of event lighting do you offer — string lights, uplighting, canopy draping?

Accepted Answer

E.L.F. Designs offers a range of event lighting options to suit different venues and styles. This includes bistro and Edison string lights, overhead canopy draping, tree and structure wrapping, uplighting for tents and architectural features, and pathway lighting. Each setup is custom-designed for your specific venue and event. During your free consultation, the team will walk through your space and recommend a combination of lighting styles that creates the look and atmosphere you're going for.

Question 41

Do you work with outdoor venues, private properties, and backyards — or only formal event spaces?

Accepted Answer

E.L.F. Designs works with all types of event spaces — formal venues, private properties, backyards, farms, barns, and anywhere else you're hosting your event in Maryland. There's no requirement for a specific type of venue. Whether you're hosting an intimate backyard wedding in Jarrettsville or a large outdoor celebration at a venue in Harford County, the team will design and install lighting that fits the space and the occasion.
